Eight Inspiring women for  International Women's  Day

March 8th is International Women's Day.  To celebrate, here are eight inspiring women on television that make us blast Destiny Child’s “Independent Women.”

1. April Carver
From the moment her uncle uttered the word Cancer, April’s been Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” and Kelly Clarkson's “Stronger.”  Even without her cancer diagnose, April would have made this list.  When we met her, she talked her way into a blood drive to get the story.  "A little setback" like cancer    has not stopped April. It’s refreshing to watch a young woman focus unapologetically on her career.   We might be drawing Leo and April forever on our notebooks, but the line we really cheer for is her byline.

2. Jane Rodriguez
I already wrote about how I think we all should be #JustLikeJane.   In tennis, people always say you play better against a better player.  Somehow your play just rises to the occasion.   Jane is like an expert level tennis player surrounded by mediocre ones.   She makes everyone around her better simply by being herself and that is nothing short of inspiring.

3. Cookie Lyons
Sure, dealing drugs is bad, but everything else Cookie does seem so good.   It is a good thing she kept Lucious’ last name because she is a lioness especially when it comes to protecting her family.  She can give a speech to stuffy Wallstreet investors and outdrink a bunch of gangster rappers. The question really is…is there anything Cookie can’t do?

4. Peggy Carter
The chick is a freaking SPY in a time when women were told the only things they should be listening into were their husbands’ dinner orders.   She is stronger and more independent than most modern women on television with half the rights.  For some weird reason, the 1940's characters didn’t hear me yelling at the TV, “It was Peggy!” when the government gave all the credit to Thompson for saving the city.  Peggy doesn’t need my useless screaming defense, though, because she already knows she was Badass B.

5. Felicity Smoak
Barry might literally run circles around her, Oliver can kill himself on the salmon latter (shirtless please) and Ray can fly around in his suit, but the real strength behind these heroes sits in an office chair behind her beloved computers.  She’ll never strap on a mask (eyeholes are confusing) or fight on the streets, but she’s a hero.   Maybe the greatest of them all because Felicity ‘s moral code is the constant in this journey, making her the guiding light.  I mean you've seen the light every time #Olicity kiss, right?

6./ 7.  Stef and Lena Foster
Life never seemed to give the Foster kids much of a break until they met Stef and Lena.  If you are lucky, you get one amazing mom, and after heartbreaking backgrounds, the Foster kids now get two.  Independently these ladies are strong but together, they are force of nature.

8. Olivia Pope
Somewhere last season in the love triangles, we lost Olivia a bit. Then she got kidnapped and, although taking Olivia away from the best wardrobe on television is a crime against humanity, it did give us back Olivia.  She is the original gladiator who saves herself every time.   Whether you are #TeamJake or #TeamFitz, the winning team will always be #TeamOlivia.

10 moments when olicity broke the interent

Clearly I love Arrow and one of the big reasons is Olicity.  Move over Kim K because Olicity has already broken the internet plenty of times.
Picture
10. Right in the Love Fern
Felicity has made it quite clear that she will not be sitting down in a damp basement pining for Oliver, even if that basement has a salmon ladder.  When Oliver sees his Girl Wednesday lip locked with Superman, I mean Ray Palmer, he, like the rest of the Olicity fandom, loses his mind. We all held our breaths because his outburst almost had one causality: the love Fern.

9. Can I Trust You?
When Felicty walks in, Oliver does this trance like windshield wiper wave, probably because he’s in the same Olicity trance that we are now all in.  She gives him the notebook and we’re one step closer to the Queen being in her rightful thrown: her chair in the lair.

Picture
8. Hi, I’m Oliver Queen
She babbled, he smirked and Olicity was born.  From that moment on, the childhood scars of red pen markings were erased because a red pen became the sweetest of writing instruments.

7. If you’re not Leaving, I’m not Leaving
The city is burning and earthquake machines are about to go off.  The smart move might be to catch an Uber out of Starling. Yet, we were all with Felicity when she pledged her loyalty to Oliver and Team Arrow.   This became the “I’ll never let go, Jack”  Titanic quote for the Olicity fandom.  And from that moment on, as long as Olicity is there, we’re not leaving.

6. Island Swing
Oliver: Tarzan.  Felicity: Jane. Audience: Dead. Whenever these two propel through the air, Tumblr and hearts explode.   Maybe it was the long hiatus or Stephen Amell’s blinding abs, but this particular swing left us as breathless as Felicity.

5.Do Whatever it Takes
Felicity has always been the good angel on Oliver’s shoulder.  They might as well pull a Full House Michelle Tanner gag and shrink her down and put her on his shoulder.  Then put Laurel, dressed in red, on the other screaming Kill! Kill!  So when Felicity channeled her inner Sopranos’ wife and told Oliver to get Thea back by any means necessary, we all agreed....that was HOT!

4. What Happens in Russia Stays in Russia
I don’t care how many times my Mom claims that Doctor Zhivago is one of the most romantic movies of all time. Thanks to Isabel Rochev and her vodka pushing harlot ways, Russia will always be the place where romance goes to die.

3. There was No Choice to Make
Here’s where these two mess with my psyche. I should not daydream of being kidnapped by a hopped up drug dealer.  But if Oliver Queen or Stephen Amell comes to my rescue and then softly grazes my arm to calm me, I got to say kind of worth it.   Also this was Olicity fans first real smoaking (yes Smoaking) gun that we were not looking through our shipper glasses and Oliver had joined us and was falling for Felicity.  Dude broke his vow and put, not one, but three arrows in The Count.  Endgame chants were mounting.

2. The Bait and Switch
The scene was set. An abandoned mansion, one crazed villain and our hot couple. And finally Oliver says those three little words, “I love you.” Hearts stopped. Victory videos were being prepped for YouTube and then it was revealed to be a ploy.  Remotes were thrown and Olicity fans were left in what can be described as the following, “I spent five months in a hellish hiatus.”

Picture
1.  3.01
I can’t pick just one moment because this episode had it all.  From the debut of the Love Fern, to Felicity grabbing Oliver’s face, to Oliver’s babbling date request, to that said date literally blowing up and to that final hot kiss turned heartbreak in the Olicity cardiac arrest wing of the hospital.   This episode left all Olicity fans so emotional that whenever someone mentions “Italian for dinner?" we end up huddled in the fetal position singing, “Didn’t we almost have it all?”

Honorable Mention
This maybe wasn’t an Internet breaking moment, but great for the office chair industry.
Anyone With Boobs
There’s no Felicity I love more than Sassy Felicity, especially when she knocks frat boys for being indefensible against the power of a well-endowed chest.  She tops off the burn with a victory spin in her chair leading me to always want a sensible office chair in my proximity when insulting someone.

And we are only midway through Season Three!  Catch up on all things Arrow and Olicity on the New

Finally fall

FINALLY FALL
So I know to most normal people, Fall means any of the following.

1.  Football
2.  Pumpkin Spice Lattes
3.  Actually any Pumpkin related activities, including instagramming pumpkin patch type photos with the caption "Happy Fall Y'all"
4.   Halloween
5.   Homecoming

For me, Fall signifies one HUGE LIFE ALTERING event.

FINALLY, TV IS BACK!!!!

1. Arrow (Wednesdays, CW 8pm EST)
If you have spent a solid hour around me in the past year, I probably have mentioned this show.  Maybe 30 minutes.  Okay, five minutes.    Yes, the action is good.  And yes comic book shows are all the rage, but the reason to watch is OLICITY.  The pairing of Oliver and Felicity is a thing made in Tumblr gif heaven and worth the season pass.   Watch them and believe in love again after "Gone Girl" destroys your belief in it.

2. Scandal (Thursdays, ABC 9pm EST)
It got weird last year.  Like Huck licked Quinn's face weird, but I'm hopeful for this season. First off, they don't have to cover Kerry Washington's pregnancy bump, which means  finally the return of the fabulous fashion.  When I first binged watched this show, I immediately bought a signature Olivia Pope white suit.  Unfortunately, as Abby learned last year when she tried to pull off a white coat, white is not a redheads' color. But it wasn't just the wardrobe that was lacking, but the stories too.  Normally, "procedural" is a dirty word for me, but in the first two seasons Scandal did a solid job of using the procedural case  "B" story to heighten the soapy drama.   So here's hoping for some crazy scandalous Washington stories for the gladiators to handle.  Also, if Liv doesn't want Captain Jake Ballard, I will take him.  I would have also taken Noel Crane, even though I was a Ben/Felicity fan.  Oh, that was a confusing love triangle.   Basically, I will take any version of Scott Foley. Will he ever get the girl?

3.  New Girl (Tuesday, FOX 9pm EST)
I didn't like last season.  I didn't hate it like some people, but Nick and Jess together zapped the tension right out of the apartment.  Schmidt went from loveable douchebag to just a douchebag. The douchebag jar must be overflowing after last season.  Now everyone’s single again, and the show can get back to basics.  The return showed promise with the characters bemoaning over save the dates on their fridge and having to go to yet another summer wedding.   These are the hijinks we want to see because aren’t we just looking for some twenty something friends whose jobs are jokes, are broke and love life’s DOA?  That seems like a winning formula.

My potential new BFFs (aka the Silver ones)

1.  The Flash (Tuesdays, CW 8pm EST)
I'm already on board.  I've been on board since Barry Allen made the Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, green with envy last December.  Then I saw an advanced screening of the pilot, and I was hooked.  It’s lighter and funnier than the Arrow, but with the same action pack we have come to expect week to week.  It also has my all time favorite Broadway musical, Rent, alum Jesse L. Martin.  As of right now, it doesn’t have anything quite like Olicity, but neither did Arrow till episode three.

2. Jane the Virgin (October 13, 2014 CW 9pm EST)
Maybe I’m drawn to this because ever since I learned of the Immaculate Conception during my Catholic school days I was petrified that that it would happen to me.  So "girl gets artificially inseminated by accident" logline jumped off the page for me. I also saw this pilot in advance at the same Paley event that I saw The Flash pilot.  Now no one at that panel was there to see Jane, sad but true.  They all were comic book Flash fanatics. Jane was something they just had to get through.  Never the less, the laughs were big and the gasps audible.  If it can win over that crowd, you should check it out.   Also, it has a progressive and unique way of bilingual element.  Univision did beat ESPN in the ratings for World Cup, so that’s something to watch.

3. Gotham (Mondays, FOX 8pm EST)
Ok, so I’m not as excited about this show as I was two weeks ago.  The second episode was not my favorite.  I still think though once they figure out who to focus on this show could be great.   Right now the world seems a bit bloated with Jada Pinkettt Smith being the dead weight.  Also, it has not yet figured out if it wants to be dark "Nolan" Batman like the pilot or more goofy 80's Batman like the second episode.  These things take time and hopefully all the kinks will be worked out, and Gotham will earn its place as new BFF.
